In this workshop participants will explore how general and discipline-specific literacy skills work together to enhance content-area learning and participation in science. With attention to the intersection between the Next Generation Science Standards and the CT Core Standards for ELA and Literacy, we will address how secondary teachers can support students' literacy development along a progression toward disciplinary literacy - reading, writing, and thinking like a scientist and engineer. We will draw upon reading and writing workshop structures, methods, and tools that teachers can lean on throughout the inquiry process, applying these literacy best practices to disciplinary ways of knowing, doing, and communicating. Come ready to engage as a reader, writer, and thinker about science!
Participants will leave this workshop with:
- A vision for disciplinary literacy's place on a progression of literacy development
- Instructional strategies to foster content-area learning and disciplinary thinking through both receptive (reading, listening, viewing) and expressive (writing and speaking) modes of communication
