Burgers, Bologna & Bacteria

Description The workshop offers teachers the opportunity to grow bacteria in Petri dishes, use microscopes to observe, then illustrate and describe in writing the bacteria they have grown. Teachers will also produce yogurt through the bacterial fermentation of milk and prepare frozen dairy products. Ultimately, teachers will compare and contrast the role of bacteria in food production and food spoilage.
 
Objectives As a result of taking part in this workshop, participants will:
  • Become familiar with the technology of food preservation, aligned with CT Science Standard 7.4.
  • Explore the variety of ways in which foods are preserved.
  • Understand how food preservation prevents spoilage caused by microbes.
